O'Grady's father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She grew up in Wheaton and went to Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. In commercials, she appeared prior to her move from Wheaton, Illinois, to Los Angeles. The first role she had was modeling as a model for Montgomery Ward. She also featured in a variety of commercials. She debuted on screen in 1988 in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then cast as a recurring role in ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In addition to guest-starring on other shows and appearing in independent films as well as produced for television, she also appeared as an actor in a variety of TV shows. Donna Abandando, her first significant role in the ABC detective show NYPD Blue was the character she played. O'Grady was the long-haired secretary of the squad from 1993 to 1996. She was nominated in the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting actress in a drama for each year. Together with her cast she received the Screen Actors Guild Award, for Outstanding Performance of an Ensemble in Drama Series.
