O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. The quality of her singing impressed jury, and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high marks from jury. However, she suffered significant defeats during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed within the bottom three followed by the in the bottom two. The judges were awed at her performance and suggested viewers choose those who sing well like Melissa. O'Neil was consistently delivering stellar performances since then, always finished in the top three. The two other performances she gave on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced to the top two spots in the finals of the competition, Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil got a call from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol right away.
